Why People in the UK Are Choosing Avenelle Canterbury

Why People in the UK Are Choosing Avenelle Canterbury

We hear the same sentence in almost every email that lands in our inbox. It's rarely a complaint. It's said more like a confession.

"I'd stopped enjoying shopping."

Not because people stop caring about how they look somewhere around fifty. Everyone we speak to cares. It's that the shops seemed to stop caring back — and after enough disappointing changing rooms, most people simply decide it isn't worth the afternoon.

That's the whole reason Avenelle Canterbury exists. Here's what we've tried to do differently.

Sizing that's told straight

Online sizing has trained a generation to order two of everything and send one back. We think that's a failure of information, not a fact of life.

We say whether a piece runs relaxed or close, and what to do if you're between sizes. And if you're still not certain, you can email us before you order and get an actual opinion from an actual person.

It's not glamorous. It's just the thing that stops a good purchase from becoming a returns label.

Comfort that isn't a compromise

For a long time the choice seemed to be between clothes that looked good and clothes that felt good, and after fifty you were expected to quietly pick the second one and stop making a fuss.

We don't accept that trade. A waistband can sit comfortably and still look sharp. A knit can be warm without adding bulk. A shoe can support you through a full day and still be one you'd happily wear to lunch. Every piece we choose has to pass both tests, or it doesn't go on the site.

Prices that make sense

"Investment piece" is usually just a nicer way of saying expensive.

We'd rather sell you something well made at a price that doesn't require a conversation with yourself in the car park. That means being honest about where the money goes: natural fabrics where they genuinely matter, solid construction where things fail first, and no premium simply for a name on a label.

Run by people your own age

We're Marianne and Edward. We're in our fifties. We started this because we were shopping for ourselves and coming home empty-handed, and there is a limit to how many Saturdays you're willing to give up.

That matters more than it sounds. When we look at a sleeve length, we're thinking about our own arms. When we check a waistband, we're thinking about a three-hour lunch. We're not designing for a customer profile in a document — we're designing for the person we see in the mirror.

Someone actually replies

Send us an email and a person reads it. Usually the same working day, usually one of us.

Ask about sizing and you'll get a straight answer, even when the straight answer is that a particular piece probably isn't right for what you've described. We'd rather lose the sale than lose your trust — a returned parcel costs us both far more than a moment of honesty.

What we're still working on

We're a young brand and we know exactly where we're not finished yet. The size range needs to go further at both ends. The outerwear range isn't where we want it for a British autumn. And we'd like to get orders to you faster than we currently manage.

All of that is on the list, and most of it went on the list because a customer told us.

If there's something you can't find, or something that didn't fit the way it should have, we genuinely want to hear it: info@avenellecanterbury.com.

That's how the next collection gets decided.
